What is Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Adha, also called Bakrid or Eid ul-Zuha, is the festival of sacrifice. It remembers the faith of Prophet Ibrahim, who was ready to sacrifice his son Ismail on God's command, before God provided a ram in his place.
When is it celebrated?
It falls on the tenth day of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, during the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah. The date depends on the sighting of the moon, so it can shift by a day.
Qurbani and sharing
After the Eid prayer, families who can afford it perform qurbani, the sacrifice of an animal. The meat is divided into three parts: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor, so that everyone can share in the festival.
