What is Eid ul-Fitr?
Eid ul-Fitr is the festival that marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. It is celebrated on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, and the exact date depends on the sighting of the new moon, so it can shift by a day.
Prayers and charity
The day begins with the special Eid namaz, offered in congregation at mosques and Eidgahs. Before the prayer, every family gives Zakat al-Fitr, known as fitra, to the poor so that everyone can celebrate.
Sewaiyan and Eidi
People wear new clothes, hug each other saying "Eid Mubarak", and visit friends and relatives. Homes serve sheer khurma, sewaiyan and biryani, and elders give children Eidi, a gift of money.
