What is Ramadan?
Ramadan (Ramzan) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the holiest month of the year for Muslims. It is believed to be the month in which the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad. It begins when the new crescent moon is sighted, so the first roza can shift by a day.
Roza, sehri and iftar
Adult Muslims who are able to fast (roza) from dawn to sunset, without food or water. The day starts with sehri, a meal before dawn, and the fast is opened at sunset with iftar, traditionally with dates and water, followed by fruit, pakoras and sharbat shared with family and neighbours.
Prayer, charity and Eid
The month is spent in extra prayer, including the night-time taraweeh prayers, reading the Quran and giving zakat and charity. The last ten nights include Shab-e-Qadr, the Night of Power. Ramadan ends when the Shawwal moon is sighted, and the next day is celebrated as Eid ul-Fitr.
