What is Shab-e-Barat?

Shab-e-Barat, the Night of Forgiveness, is observed on the night between the 14th and 15th of Sha'ban, the month before Ramadan. Many Muslims believe that on this night Allah decides the fate of every person for the coming year and forgives those who sincerely repent. The date depends on the sighting of the moon, so it can shift by a day.

How it is observed

Many Muslims in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh spend the night in prayer, recite the Quran and ask forgiveness for themselves and for family members who have passed away. Some visit graves to pray for the departed, and many keep a voluntary fast the next day.

Halwa and charity

Homes prepare sweets such as suji or chane ki dal ka halwa and share them with neighbours and the poor. Giving charity and forgiving other people's mistakes are an important part of the night.
